I’ve seen it happen too many times. And that’s part of why ICUL Hair & Beauty, a growing premium human hair wig brand in Nigeria, exists today.
How It All Started
I didn’t start this business just because I love hair. I started because I saw an opportunity… and then I saw a problem.
When I began learning about the hair business, I quickly realized something that didn’t sit right with me — a lot of vendors were intentionally creating problems just to make more money. Problems like unnecessary lies, overpricing, poor quality products and even worse… poor customer treatment. It didn’t feel right. And that’s when I knew there was space for a trusted hair vendor in Nigeria that truly puts customers first. But what made it more personal for me was my own experience.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Last year, I bought a 10-inch bone straight wig for my mum’s birthday. I paid ₦180,000 for it. At that time, I believed I was paying for quality.
But when I got deeper into the business, I discovered that same wig actually cost around ₦95,000. That moment changed everything for me. Not just because of the money… but because I realized how many people are being overcharged for the lowest hair quality without even knowing. Denying them the opportunity to glow more and still charge them premium for it.
That was when I made the decision:
If I’m going to build a premium human hair wig brand in Nigeria, I’m going to do it differently.
The Problem With Buying Human Hair Wigs in Nigeria
What I Discovered After Talking To Customers
At one point, I used to think women weren’t buying hair as often simply because wigs are too expensive for the ladies to just buy as much.
But the deeper I got into this industry, the more I realized I was wrong. The issue wasn’t that women are not making enough or didn’t want quality hair.
The issue was trust.
I started noticing something worrying — too many customers had stories of buying through multiple middlemen, paying extremely high prices, and still receiving products that didn’t match expectations.
So instead of assuming… I decided to ask them directly.
Between February and June, I interviewed 33 new customers — 28 from Nigeria and 5 from Ghana — to understand their buying behaviour and previous experiences.
The results surprised me. I asked one simple question:
“How did you discover us?”
The answers were eye-opening:
- 20% came through referrals from friends and existing customers
- 80% discovered us through online research — social media, Google search, and digital recommendations
One customer even told me she found us through ChatGPT (it was funny and quiet unbelievable but yes… she actually showed me the screenshot).
That was a huge lesson for me: People are no longer buying blindly, rather they are researching, Comparing, reading reviews and looking for proof before spending.
I asked customers another question:
“Have you ever had a bad experience buying hair?”
Almost everyone had a story. Here’s what stood out:
- 40% said they bought factory wigs marketed as premium virgin bundle wigs
- 60% complained about excessive pricing — in some cases paying around 30% above expected market ranges
One example a customer shared was paying ₦213,000 for a 16-inch SDD Chinese Pixie Curl (200g).
Meanwhile the price range is from 160k to 200k max in any location in nigeria. She said the vendor only removed 2k making it 213k.
But pricing wasn’t even the biggest frustration.
- 40% complained about poor customer support after purchase
- 1 customer was completely scammed and never received her order
- 100% said they had never been offered a return policy
- 30% complained about long and unpredictable delivery timelines
After hearing these stories, I stopped asking: “Which wigs do nigerian women buy the most ?”
And started asking:
“How do I become a vendor in Nigeria people can trust ?”
That question changed everything.

People weren’t mainly searching:

Instead, people were searching things like:

- trusted bone straight dealer
- best hair plug in Anambra
- where to buy original wigs in Onitsha
- trusted hair vendor in Nigeria
